Biography

Steve Schmidt is an adjunct professor in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University, based in Boston.

Schmidt has taught machine learning and neural networks at Khoury College since 2023. He enjoys equipping his students to navigate the ever-changing landscape of mathematical and technological advances, shifting professional entities, and evolving problem and solution spaces. In his research, Schmidt is fascinated by reinforcement learning and feedback loops, and by the ways mathematical frameworks can structure sometimes subjective concepts, such as what “good” is.

Outside of his work at Khoury College, Schmidt serves as director of machine learning at Nike. His team explores state-of-the-art models powering personalization, search, and recommendations across business-to-consumer and business-to-business digital experiences. His work has won a broad variety of awards, including an INFORMS Franz Edelman Prize in 2018.
